This blog is written by Christine Dann. I am a New Zealander with a Ph.D in Environmental Policy who has been studying the global industrial food system - and alternatives to it - for nearly 20 years.
I have written about the alternatives to industrial food actually happening in New Zealand today in my book Food@Home, and I blog on organic gardening and what to cook from the garden as The Eco Gardener.
I started working on a manuscript entitled The Dead End Diet six years ago and originally set up this blog under that name, with a view to writing essays that would be part of the book here.
That hasn't worked since 2012 because I got too busy doing other things - but almost every week since then another item exemplifying what's wrong the global industrial food system has hit the headlines. The mainstream media report such news without joining the dots, or putting the item in context. They also often get things wrong, because they have no clues about the realities of industrial farming and food systems.
So I thought the least I could do is try and keep logging what is going on as it happens, supplying as much of the background and context as I have time to provide. I'm not aiming to cover everything in a comprehensive way, but rather to shed a little light into some murky corners whenever I find I have a good torch to do so.
